Climbers Get Lost When Mobile Phone They Were Using For Map Runs Out Of Battery

Three climbers who set out to scale the 14 peaks of Snowdonia guided by Google Earth got lost and had to be rescued – when their mobile phone batteries packed up.

The men managed to send a message saying they were lost in the dark after bad weather set in as they made for the final summit.

Rescuers who set out to find them just before midnight brought them down from 3,091ft Foel Fras at dawn yesterday.

Ogwen mountain rescue spokesman Chris Lloyd said: “You should not rely on electronic systems for
navigation.

"What you need is a map and compass, and to know how to use them.”
He added that none of the men had mountain walking experience and that their kit was “very limited”.
The trio, all in their 20s and from the London area, were given warm clothing, food and drinks at Abergwyngregyn, near Bangor.

Two others had already dropped out.
