Now You Can Earn A Diploma In Beer From B.C.'s Kwantlen University

Have you always wanted to learn more about brewing beer? Maybe you have dreams of opening your own craft brewery?
B.C.'s Kwantlen Polytechnic University has just made that easier to achieve with the announcement of its science of brewing program, launching this September.
The first of its kind in B.C., this two-year diploma program offers students hands-on learning about the science and business of brewing beer at the university's Langley campus (where there is a specially
designed brew laboratory).
“Along with practical hands-on training, we’ll be giving students a solid background in the science behind brewing craft beer, including the chemistry and microbiology involved in the process," Elizabeth Worobec, dean of the faculty of science and horticulture at Kwantlen, said in a news release. "It’s this much-needed expertise that graduates will bring to the province’s brewing industry.”
As B.C.'s craft beer industry continues to boom, with the province's breweries garnering nation-wide attention, the science of brewing program aims to meet the industry's demand for qualified and properly trained employees.
“Right now you’re getting a lot of people who’re applying without any kind of experience,” Nicholas Bolton, head brewer at Big Ridge Brewing Company, told CTV News. “Once you can get a course behind it… I think it's going to help out the brewing industry quite a bit, and you know that people coming out of this course are going to be able to produce top-quality products.”
Courses include calculations and recipe formation, business ethics, and brewing equipment and technology. The curriculum, which involves a work placement, was created in consultation with the BC Craft Brewers Guild as well as some of B.C.'s brewmasters.
